Exhibition Text
This piece represents the journey of trying to find out who I really am, and what I want to accomplish. My name is displayed backwards to express how lost and turned around I am in life. I want to be successful and make an honest living, but I also want to do something I wont be bored of, I want a career in something I'll love doing. I have no Idea what collage I am going to or where I'm gunna be in 10 years, all I know is I'm going to try to do what's best for myself.
Inspiration
Stated by Chiang Yee, Chinese calligraphy, the stylized artistic writing of Chinese characters, the written form of Chinese that unites the languages (many mutually unintelligible) spoken in China. Because calligraphy is considered supreme among the visual arts in China, it sets the standard by which Chinese painting is judged. Indeed, the two arts are closely related. The early Chinese written words were simplified pictorial images, indicating meaning through suggestion or imagination. These simple images were flexible in composition, capable of developing with changing conditions by means of slight variations. The greatest exponents of Chinese calligraphy were Wang Xizhi and his son Wang Xianzhi in the 4th century. Few of their original works have survived, but a number of their writings were engraved on stone tablets and woodblocks, and rubbings were made from them. Many great calligraphers imitated their styles, but none ever surpassed them for artistic transformation.
Planning
I experimented with a few different techniques. I used acrylic paint on paper to get the brushstroke look achieved by Wang Xizhi. and added little flowers for happy moments in my life that have shaped me into who I am today.
|
I then borrowed some Arteza Brush markers and experimented with the different brushstrokes in my inspiration, so I would be able to mimic the strokes on the linoleum plates.
|
I also sketched out my name with Pigma markers. One a brush marker, and a size 2 marker. I personally liked the straight lines that the size 2 marker created and the formal look, However I also really liked the classic brushstroke look.

Process/Technique/Experimentation
I took water based ink and a metal slab, a Brayer, and a Baron. I started this process by putting water based ink on the metal slab and rolling it with the Brayer. when it was evenly spread I started rolling the ink onto the linoleum slab that I cut my design into with a Brayer. I made sure that the ink was evenly coated on the linoleum slab.
|
After I coated the linoleum plate with ink, I then took a piece of drawing paper and placed it on top of the linoleum plate. I then used the plastic Barron to press the paper into the linoleum plate to create a print. I preferred the plastic Barron as opposed to the Bamboo one because I was able to press harder and with more control.

Reflection
My piece is made with a linoleum plate that I Scratched out to create my name. I used water based ink to print the image on to the paper. I wanted to express my journey of finding myself, and how at the moment I have no Idea who I am or what I'm doing, I have no Idea what I will accomplish in the future, I just know that I will work hard to get there. I am ultimately happy with my piece and proud of what it represents. I'm very lucky that I got a good print on my first try, and I think it was because of how deep I cut into the linoleum slate. One of the challenges that I faced with this project was trying to create a detailed piece. I didn't want it to become too busy, but I also didn't want it to be too minimalistic, so I added the black stripes on the sides to add a more pronounced look to my name. Other than That I was happy with how my piece turned out.
