Project Title: The Only Way
|
In my piece I wanted to display some sort of clock, compass, or dial to mimick Salvador Dali's persistence of memory. And I also wanted to apply Evan Gruzis' style to my piece, to add a serious tone to the idea of time or direction.

Meaning Behind The Piece:
The meaning behind this piece goes back to the start of my 7th grade year. When I was in middle school I started working on career cruising and I realized that I really had a knack for technology and graphic design. Every career survey I took I got some kind of career in technology. This piece shows how all throughout my life I've loved video games and admired digital content creators. I've always wanted to follow in their footsteps and I've always been shut down and told that that path wasn't safe or smart. This has always made me conflicted as to what path I should follow in my life. I cut off all directions in life other than the ones my parents want me to follow. That path is symbolized by the red north sign, It shows how blatant and obvious that path his and the lack of coordinates in my life show that I feel like I can't really do anything else in life. The black and white in this piece also shows the dullness around me and my life knowing that I will always be told what to do in my life and not do what I want to do.
Planning:
In my piece I wanted to display some sort of clock, compass, or dial to mimic Salvador Dali's persistence of memory. I also wanted to apply Evan Gruzis' style to my piece, to add a serious tone to the idea of time or direction.
Experimentation:
I experimented with different gradiance of color to emphasis the importance of the compass, and to mute the background using contrast between black and white. I experimented with the different colors such as blue for the vocal point, but came to the realization that red really stood out through the black and white contrast, and showed the importance of North on the compass.
Process:
For the first part of this project I just cropped the compass alone by itself to try and mess around with different colors and backgrounds on a "Blank canvas".
Next I chose to mess around with the color gradient tool and I chose the have a black to white gradient across the entire compass.
Next after I realized that I really liked the color gradient I chose to use the curves tool to increase the contrast between the black and the white.
Next I chose to do a similar color gradation for the background of the piece to see how it all matched up.
Finally I chose to paint the N red to help put more emphasis on the point of the piece, my desire to strive towards one direction in my life.

Critique:
In this piece I believe that I did a reasonably decent job for my first time using Photoshop for an actual project. I enjoyed the process overall and I enjoyed experimenting with all of the different tools that Photoshop has to offer. I do believe that there were some areas where my piece was lacking such as my use of tools in Photoshop/ I think I could have branched out a little more and could have chosen to use more of the impactful tools that Photoshop has to offer such as the lasso tool or the duplication tool. I also think I could have maybe used a little more color in my piece overall to give it a little more life while still keeping a overall serious tone.

Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause effect relationship between your inspiration and its effect on your artwork?
The serious tone from my piece comes from the inspiration of Evan Gruzis work. It puts a lot of emphasis on one or two objects while sort of blurring out the surrounding area. Salvador Dali's persistence of memory was the main inspiration for the compass for my piece. What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration? The author for the article of Salvador Dali's persistence of memory describes it as surreal and almost dreamlike in a way. What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, culture, etc. while you researched your inspiration? I noticed that there are a lot of popular opinions when it comes to one specific piece of artwork and it is sometimes hard to figure out if those opinions are individual or really just people joining in on one popular art opinion. What is the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?. The central idea around my research is to display the idea of being forced or rather persuaded to move in one direction weather or not you want to. What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research? I came up with the idea that both Salvador Dali and Evan Gruzis create visually obvious and bold statements in their work. |
