In The Community MIAD Project:
In this project we will be making a piece involving an issue in our community. this piece will consist of a chosen background with a set of stencils place on the image.
Toxicity and Covered Culture are two pieces with two different meanings. Toxicity focuses on the polution issue in milwaukee and how waste is dumped into the water almost every day. The large black smoke stacks are meant to be intimidating and coresponds with the thick grey smoke in the sky. I also put fish in the water mainly due to the fact that if you simply head down to the lake you will almost always see a dead fish or two just sitting their rotting. Covered Culture is a piece focusing on the buried native american culture in Milwaukee. Milwaukee at one time consisted of many different native american tribes but through time and industrialization those tribes disappeared and even now today native american culture is slowly becoming less and less recognized.
Inspiration: |
My main inspiration for these pieces was Zoriah Photojournalist. I like how she is not afraid to photograph images that may be disturbing or not visually pleasing. At the same time it helps you to grasp the reality of the situation. I used this inspiration for both of my pieces. for my first piece i focused on a topic that for some is personal and that is the pollution issue in lake Michigan and for my second piece I covered the topic of the lack of representation of native american culture in Milwaukee.
Meaning Behind The Piece:
As similarly stated in my inspiration behind the piece the meaning is almost the same. my meaning behind Toxicity is how the pollution that is happening in lake Michigan and really all around the world is damaging to the surrounding life. The meaning behind my other piece covered culture is about how the native american culture in Milwaukee has been covered up over time.
Experimentation:
These two photos were actually going to be the origional photos I was going to choose but my reasoning for not choosing them is I believe they don't display my idea enough. It would take me being there eplaining it to get the idea across and I just don't want that.
Process:
1. Creating the background. When I created my background I walked around to different parts of Milwaukee took various photos of things I am passionate about in Milwaukee.
2. Next I uploaded my photos to photoshop and changed the color schemes on them. For Toxicity I also added a black border to the outside to make it look like a older photo.
3. After that I then created my stencils that I am going to be placing on the background
4. I then gave my Background and stencil ideas to Mr. Chad
5. After that a day or so later Jason came in to review our pieces
6. then we took our trip to MIAD to place our stencils on our backgrounds concluding our pieces.

Reflection: Toxicity
This piece is about the struggle that Milwaukee faces with pollution in the city but also in lake Michigan. This piece was very personal to me mainly due to the fact that I love nature and in the early years of my life I was very connected to nature and the outside life. The smoke stacks represent the companies that pollute the air by having their factories dump waste right into the environment. The fish represent the outcome of this neglectful behavior towards the environment and how this can impact wildlife in many horrible ways.
Reflection: Covered Culture
The meaning behind this piece is the lack of representation of native American culture in Milwaukee. The native American culture in Milwaukee as gotten smaller and smaller thought the years. This has been a problem in many different states and Wisconsin is one of them.
ACT Questions:
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause effect relationship between your inspiration and its effect on your artwork? My inspiration for this project did have a pretty big effect on my artwork due to the fact my inspiration plays a major role in the choices I make to produce my art.
What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration? For the people I researched for my inspiration They both focus on heavy topics that might be a little hard to look at. What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, culture, etc. while you researched your inspiration? That some people aren't afraid to do things that might not be excepted by the general population. They choose to make their art based on what they want and who they want to view their art. What is the central idea or theme around your inspirational research? I wanted to focus on art that could be personal to people who have been through or are possibly going through a difficult personal situation. I also wanted to focus that art on a larger topic that effects most of us in a small way. What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research? I was impressed with how professional the photographers managed to stay while being around such depressing and hard to stomach scenarios. |
